Hunting in BC

CORE Hunter Ed
Many Canadians enjoy the adventure of hunting in Canada’s back country and rugged wilderness areas. In British Columbia, the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife Branch creates the regulations pertaining to hunting and the BC Wildlife Federation (BCWF) operates the Hunter Education Program on behalf of the Ministry.

The first step to becoming a licensed hunter is to take the Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) training. This training covers a wide variety of subjects including:

  • Hunting Legislation and Outdoor Ethics
  • Ecology and Wildlife Management
  • First Aid and Safety
  • Wilderness Survival and Bushcraft
  • Firearms Safety
  • Animal and Bird Identification
Our Service

Our CORE instructor has been certified by the BC Wildlife Federation as a CORE Examiner and can provide you the training to be successful on the CORE exam. Our instructor is a:

  • Internationally Qualified Firearms Instructor
  • Zoologist (expert in animal identification and ecology)
  • Professional Forester (years of bush work throughout BC)
  • Trained and experienced in military bushcraft and survival
  • Former member of Campbell River Search and Rescue
  • BC Hunter

The course is $200 CAD (plus tax) and includes 21 hours of training, a written exam, a practical firearms safety exam, and the CORE manual. Those wishing to challenge the exam may purchase a CORE manual from us for $20 and when ready, may contact us to schedule the exams for $10 each. Those unsuccessful may re-challenge the exams. Call us to schedule your CORE training!

If you already have a Possession and Acquisition Licence, you do not have to take the practical firearms safety test. Please note that the CORE exam and hunting regulations do not preclude any requirements that exist for possessing a firearm. To acquire a firearm you must still have a Firearms Licence.

Next Steps

Successful candidates will receive a course report which they send to the BC Wildlife Federation with a $30 handling fee. After processing the course report and payment, the BCWF sends them their CORE certificate. The candidate then takes this certificate to the nearest BC government Access Centre where they receive their BC Resident Hunter Number Card. To purchase a BC resident Hunting Licence, you will be required to produce your Hunter Number Card.

Further Training

Please note that CORE training is classroom based. Becoming proficient with a firearm requires hands-on training and hunters are encouraged to sign up for our hunting marksmanship courses. Next time you take that shot, you’ll thank yourself for training with Executive! See our Live Fire section for details and call to schedule your training today!
